At last we can talk about this project! We have been working on The Complete Dracula since late 2007 and the finished scripts add up to over 120,000 words (which isn't all that far behind the 166,000-ish words of the original text really). It's been a mammoth undertaking but we have really enjoyed it and can't wait for people to see what Colton has done with the artwork.

Just a quick post to let you all know, the domain name www.moorereppion.com is now showing a placeholder as we have switched from Godaddy to One.com, for our domain name hosting, and from Geocities for our web storage.

We discovered we were paying tons to Godaddy and Geocities for all the different bits and bobs of the website, and it was cheaper and simpler to have it all in one place.
We should have a proper placeholder up soon, and then we can get the new website underway. In the mean time, the forum is still the same, and this blog will be the same so we can let you know whats going on as it happens.

I'm not going to patronise you, you know who Ben Templesmith is already. Oh alright then I'll patronise you. Mr. Templesmith is the Eisner award winning artist and co-creator (with Steve Niles) of 30 days of Night. He's also worked on loads and loads of stuff from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to his self penned books Wormwood Gentlman Corpse and Welcome to Hoxford. Oh and he's brilliant. I mean stupidly talented. The sort of artist we could only dream of working with... but we are!

As regular readers of this Blog (are there any such people? Hands up!) will already know, Leah and I have written a Doctor Who one-shot for IDW entitled "The Whispering Gallery" which Ben is drawing. And here is the cover:

Matt Timson is an incredibly talented chap who has been working as a professional illustrator for a good few years now. The thing is, like a lot of pro illustrators making decent money, Matt foolishly always wanted to be a comic artist. I know, beggars belief doesn't it? Well now he is one and a bloody good one at that!

We first became aware of Mr. Timson via his work in The End Is Nigh and his collaborations with the legendary Paul Scott in OmniVistaScope. Leah and I pestered him for a long, long time and eventually he agreed to help us develop our retro-futuristic horror detective concept Deadeye - stories from which have already appeared in Image Comics' Popgun Vol 1 & 2 with more to come in the future (watch this space!).

Anyway, these days Matt is busy working for Top Cow on a (brand new, out this week) series called Impaler, the blurb for which goes like this:

Millions of vampires have descended upon America. In a desperate bid to defeat them, the U.S. military nuked New York City but unfortunately, it was too little, too late. The vampire horde had already advanced westward, but how far? A team of soldiers sent to rescue a politician's plane that crash-landed in New Jersey find out the hard way. Humanity's only chance may rest in the hands of vampire hunter Vlad the Impaler and his new companion, a depressed New York City detective who wishes he was dead.

The series is already getting rave reviews and Matt's artwork is quite rightly being praised as some of the nicest looking stuff around. Do yourself a favour and pick up a copy at your earliest convenience (I'm getting mine on Saturday).

We were told to keep this quiet (even though Rich Johnston actually posted about it in LITG in late October) but I've just read this entry over on IDW Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall's Blog which pretty much gives the game away anyway.

WE ARE WRITING DOCTOR WHO! Got that? DOCTOR WHO! And BEN TEMPLESMITH is drawing it! How $%&*ing amazing is that? It's a 22 page one shot entitled The Whispering Gallery which should be in shops in February 2009.

Above are some concept images which Ben posted on his Blog earlier in November, looks like it's going to be good doesn't it?

Dynamite Entertainment's Savage Tales #10 arrived in shops this week featuring the final part of the second act (got that?) of our micro mini Battle For Atlantis with industry legend Pablo Marcus on art duties. We're very pleased with the story and always really enjoy working on BFA; we've tried to make it as authentically "classic" as we can, as if we were writing for the original Savage Tales back in the 1970s.
Also in this issue: the first part of a brand-new Red Sonya two-parter by Mike Lieb and Diego Bernard, part two of Valaka by Doug Murray and Lui Antonio and part one of a brand new Hercules story by Doug Murray and Fabiano Neves.

Mike Raicht emailed over the lettered pages for our Mike Raicht's Creature Feature story Imago last night and Leah and I were really happy with the finished product. Imago was drawn by the infamous PJ Holden (in his pre-iPhone super-stardom days) and will be published in Creature Feature #2 sometime in late December/early January.

Prior to enjoying possibly the best con ever at Thought Bubble Leeds (proper write up to follow at some point - here are some other people's in the meantime http://forbiddenplanet.co.uk/blog/?p=10301) on the 16th of November, we managed to turn in a one shot script for IDW which we are very, very excited about. We're working with an artist whose work we both love and with characters that we honestly never imagined we'd get the chance to write. Less cryptic news to follow ASAP but certain rumourmongers have already hinted at the project so, if you can't wait, get Googling.

In the next week or so we'll be putting the finishing touches to a five part Dynamite Entertainment mini series we've been working on for just on a year now. Each issue has 32 pages of story in it but that doesn't even begin to explain how dense the series is in terms of reference research and the sheer amount of stuff we've had to cram into every panel and page. It's a piece of writing that we're both extremely proud of and we can't wait to be able to talk about it properly and for people to actually read it.

We're almost half way through another five issue Dynamite mini which has some similarities with the one previously mentioned and have quite a few other potential projects on the horizon. 2009 is already looking like a very busy year.

Eric Orchard is a Canadian illustrator whose amazing work we were introduced to via the magic of the interweb maybe six months or so ago. I honestly can't remember what steam of conciseness Googling or linkage first brought either Leah or myself to Eric's website but, as so often occurs in the world of comics, it didn't take long for us to realise that the old six degrees of separation rule - or in this case more like two degrees - applies yet again.

It turns out that Eric is currently collaborating with our old chum Shane Oakley on a Steampunk series entitled The Girls of Fogg Academy. You can keep up to date with Mr. Orchard's biographical posts about the world of Fogg by clicking HERE.

There is something genuinely magical about Eric's work, whose style reminds me variously of people such as Brian Froud, Arthur Rackham and David Petersen but which is definitley wholly his own.

After two consecutive weekends of out of town comic related events and considerable liver damage, I thought it was about time I paid tribute to some more of our talented peers, all of whom just happen to be people we've bumped into recently.

Adam Cadwell is one of those enviably talented chaps who manages to find time to put out an (almost) twice weekly webcomic whilst running a sucessful commercial art company called DRAW in Manchester. On top of that his art is fantastic and his story telling subtle and witty. Makes you sick doesn't it?

Adam and other members of the Manchester Comix Collective were plying their wares at last weekend's con but, sadly, one of their number who wasn't able to stick around for unwisely heavy drinking afterwards was Mr. Chris Doherty whose work you might well recognise from the Accent UK anthologies.

Andy Bloor was another chap whose visit to BICS was all too brief. Andy is a professional graphic designer and valued member of the Accent UK team responsible not only for logos, design and layout but also for the beautiful yet horrific artwork on The Wolfmen and The Wolfmen II - Fall of The Wolfmen (coming from AUK in 2009).

We were lucky enough to work with Andy on a story for the 2008 AUK anthology Robots called The Cabinet of Doctor Diablo. If you don't already own a copy of Robots you can order one online now for £8.50 from http://www.accentukcomics.com.

Mr. Bloor also collaborated with Kieron Gillen on a tale entitled Robot for the aforementioned anthology and will be contributing to the forthcoming Phonogram 2.

Birmingham International Comics Show 2008

We have woken up rather late in a post convention fug of confusion and laundry. I have managed, however, to upload some of our pics of the weekend, and will endeavour to report on all the thrills and spills, bargains grabbed, pints drunk and gossip. Okay, not the gossip, I'd get in trouble.

Friday we got a coach down to Birmingham, which was fairly quick, very cheap and meant I could stare out of the window at things instead of swearing at the traffic on the M6.

We went to Wagamama for dinner which has become a minor obsession of ours when we go to cons, mainly because they serve Asahi Dark beer, which is very more-ish.

Our hotel was always going to be a source of fear and pain, because we have an unerring knack of booking the worst flea-pit noisy unhygenic dives wherever we go. Last year we stayed at the Britannia, which had terrible street noise (including bagpipes at 8am) and a door on our corridor which had a mouldy roast dinner on a tray behind it, and nothing else.

This year we thought we'd try again and booked the MacDonald Burlington down the street. We were trepidatious that it would be another hotel where the website makes it look like a palace and then its the Bates Motel, but I am happy to report it actually was a palace. Friendly staff,breakfast of kings which never ended, walk in wardrobe, huge huge bath and the most comfortable bed in the whole world. See what i mean?

So, after we recovered from the shock of our good fortune, we headed over to Bennet's bar for the launch party. Hunt Emerson's band was already playing up a storm by the time we got there, so saying hi to people we knew became a lip reading contest.
Several people nearly lost their voices before the con even got going, just from shouting to each other. The music (including the comic creator super group "Giant-Sized Band-Thing") was great, and all it goes to show, is that we are just reclusive wusses not used to the noise of being out of doors. It was pretty relentless though.

We had a lovely gab with Paul Cornell and Caroline, the indie manga girls, newlyweds Emma Vieceli and her lovely husband Pud, Lew stringer, Vicky and Richmond from Hi Ex, Barry Renshaw, Declan Shalvey, Adam Cadwell, Nick Setchfield, PJ Holden, Al Ewing, Ian Sharman, Jamie Mckelvie, Si Spurrier, Tony Lee and many more, guzzling beer all the while. I was so plastered i congratulated Sean Phillips on Charlie Adlards drumming...and I have to say we walked back to the Burlington in a zig zaggy way, and John even had an escapade trying to find chips. All that, and we'd only been there a few hours!

Saturday started with amazing breakfast and view of the shopping folk below. Only a short walk and we were at the Millenium point. It always feels kind of isolated stuck outside the main shopping streets, but thats all to the good, as there are loads of signs pointing there from all over the city, which there isn't when a con is in a hotel or whatever.

The con was much better laid out than last year, much less overcrowded, and less like a nerd-sweat soup than normal. We had a slice of the Accent Uk table (huge thanks to Dave and Colin again for that, and to Gemma for opening the cash box for us!) and we got our books set up and then went off to see what panels were on.

We went to see Paul Cornell, Mark Buckingham, Doug Braithwaite and Dave Gibbons doing the obligatory "breaking into America" panel, but in the form of a podcast with the guys from Geeksyndicate. It was nice to see a panel in a room designed for it for once, and it all got a bit Kilroy there, with the guys running about with mikes.

We did our signing with Staz Johnson, Mark Chiarello and Shane Oakley, and had a couple of people come to get things signed, me and shane made the most of our good looks...

then we headed back to the Accent Uk table to give the chaps a break while we tried to flog our books, saw Cliodnha Lyons although i failed to buy her excellent charity book "Sorry I can't take your call right now, I'm off saving the world" , and also the excellent Dinkybox table, where i got an amazing brush pen if you want nice markers or cute toys...go to their site now! Also grabbed some nice things from The Beepbeep car company. The afternoon flew by pretty fast, and we arranged to have dinner with a gang of mates.

The dinner thing is almost as scary a point as the hotel thing, because when you run about all day doing con stuff, the only thing in the world you want is a heap of nice food and a sit down with a beer.
Often con organisers will put on a main "Guests Dinner" which you may or may not be invited to depending on how far up your name is on the con playbill, but everyone else divides off into little subgroups and run in different directions for different meals. It can be hard to grab the right number of people and all head somewhere everyone will like, and everyone can afford. In the past we have been to lots of cons in different cities and countries, and dinner is sometimes odd, expensive, inedible or just very far away.

This time it was a bracing rainy walk through dusky brum to a glittery curry house and a very very nice meal indeed. We then popped in to the "Diamond Party" in Malmaison, which people thought was a party paid for by diamond, but was actually a normal pay bar, and comics people in some rooms. Nice enough, but it was miles from our hotel and the drinks cost an arm and a leg. We returned to Bennets, like it was the scene of a crime, and resumed where we had left off the previous night, albeit in a hungover slow motion way.

The main buzz at the table, and the con in general was the Eyecandy iphone application created by PJ Holden and written by Al Ewing which is so innovative, and cool and fun to use, it made everyone at the con immediately start thinking of things to do for them. Download the first issue for 99c (0r 50p) here, and watch them like a hawk in case you miss a second of their meteoric rise to fame and stardom!

Sunday, more huge breakfast, then packing checking out and getting to the con. Huge heap of luggage under the table at the Accent Uk stand (sorry chaps) and then off to see what panels there were.

Gegged in to watch Dave Gibbons' "Watching the Watchmen" talk which was awesome. I am fairly familair with Watchmen *ahem* but it made me nerd out to see all the early concept art, and dads typed synopsis up there on the big screen. Dave is certainly the most entertaining man to see do a panel in all of comics (anyone better? no? thought not) so it would have been ace to just sit and hear the anecdotes, but seeing the pages of his book (designed by none other than Chip Kidd) made me want to rush out and buy one right then. Dave says you can get it in the shops later this month, and I would recommend you do so immediately.

Stayed in our seats to see Rufus Dayglo do a one man show on 20 years of Tank girl, which he hadn't expected to be only him. Tank Girl's creator Alan Martin had a family emergency so couldn't come, but Mr Dayglo made it look like he'd been planning it this way all along. Interesting and entertaining tales of the Deadline starlet's trajectory over the last 20 years, and then passed his portfolios round so we could all get an ogle of his artwork. Lovely stuff sir.

Had a stint behind the table for long anough to see Tim Pilcher, Ian Edgington and Mike Collins, whose marvellous adaptation of A Christmas Carol from Classical Comics was talked about all over the con, and much admired, but which I also failed to buy (sorry Mike!), we also bothered Barry Renshaw, Adam Cadwell and Emma Vieceli for sketches...because they rock!

After that it was the usual Sunday slide into oblivion, with everyone nervously checking to see if there's likely to be a last minute surge in wealthy comic fans at 4pm, or whether they should cut their losses and make a run for it, we managed to get an amazing shot of Ian Edgington's daughter constance showing her approval of Raise The Dead and then we ran off, lugging all our unsold books...i mean 'residual stock' all the way down the road to the coach station.

Bumped into Adam Cadwell again just as we were about to keel over under the weight of our luggage, and then jumped on a crowded coach of doom back to Liverpool. Couldn't read by the futuristic roof lights, so shut our eyes and listened to everyone's phones going off and then their conversations for the rest of the journey.

Got home at half nine last night and watched the first episode of the new season of Heroes on BBC 1, which was as big a disappointment as you can get. Who wrote it? I have no idea but someone stop them before they do it again!

today, slept in, dressing gown day, unpack, and blog. We bottled 20 litres of Home-brewed stout though...ready for John's brithday later in the month.

whew. That's it folks!

The weekend after that (4th & 5th of October) we'll be at the Birmingham International Comics Show along with the likes of Dave Gibbons, D'Israeli, Mark Buckingham and pretty much everyone else from the comics world you can think of.

We will be signing on Saturday from noon until 1pm accompanied by our old chum and Albion artist/co-creator Shane Oakley.

After that we'll most likely be hanging round the Accent UK table and generally mooching around (somewhere near a bar in all probability).

One of the best things about working in comics is that you get to meet, work with and generally hang about with some really talented people. Thanks to the interweb we also get to spy on people and see what they're up to so I thought I'd share a couple of artists Blogs with you - both of whom are good mates of ours.

David Hitchcock is probably best known as the man behind the Eagle Award winning indie sensation Springheeled Jack but we've also had the privilege of collaborating with him several times for the yearly Accent UK anthologies.

Dave is currently working on Gothic - a 48 page tabloid newspaper one-shot re-printing some rare and hard to find material (including some of our collaborations) as well as some brand new stories, all of it presented in beautiful sepia tone.

We always jump at the chance to work with Dave (we've already collaborated on a story for next year's Western anthology) and hope to work with him again soon.

Leigh Gallagher started his professional career with Vertigo's The Witching back when Leah and I were doing Wild Girl. However, Leah actually met Leigh years earlier when they studied art together in Liverpool so we've all known each other for a long, long time.

Leigh's big project for the last year or so (and for the foreseeable future) is Defoe - a seventeenth century zombie steampunk romp written by comics legend Pat Mills and published in 2000 AD.

In between rendering crazily detailed zombie smashing machinery and weapons Leigh somehow also finds time to perform art chores on the Lego Bionicle Comic.

The latest issue of our current series for Dynamite has taken an age to write, almost two months by my reckoning. Much too long really to excuse, but today we got it finished and off to Dynamite. whew. We totted up our to do list the other day and my god we have a long list, but ticking this one off is a great help.

I have also done a portrait and have four more to do, so they will get squeezed in between the scripts. I am enjoying doing them apart from the sore hand afterwards.

We are making plans for Birmingham and Leeds conventions this year, as to where to stay, what to do and it looks like we are going to have fun whatever happens. Do come along and join in with either of them if you can!

I know the Leeds Thought Bubble gang are still looking for people for the tables and guests to sign and stuff, so if you want to sell there or appear professionally (that sounds so impressive lol) then get in touch via their website.

Tori Amos SDCC launch

Promoting the release of Comic Book Tattoo (which we're in!), Tori Amos has scheduled a couple appearances at the San Diego Comic Con. Plans begin with a Comic Book Tattoo panel, hosted by comics and music critic Douglas Wolk, and featuring discussion between Tori, editor Rantz Hoseley and several of the contributing creators on Saturday, July 26 from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

Shortly thereafter, 2:00 pm to be exact, Tori will be doing a signing on site. Fans wishing to meet Tori can receive tickets to her signing, limited to 200 fans, by purchasing a copy of Comic Book Tattoo at the Image Comics booth.

Tickets will be made available in increments with 20 given out on Wednesday, July 23, 75 on Thursday, July 24, another 75 on Friday, July 25 and 30 on Saturday, July 26.

Comic Con takes place at the San Diego Convention Center. More details to follow once specific locations within Convention Center have been determined.

It only seems like yesterday (well, maybe a month or so ago) that we were doing all the press for the launch of our Dynamite/Top Cow crossover The Darkness vs. Eva - Daughter of Dracula. On a completely different note, back in March 2007 I interviewed lecturer, Spaceguard member, neo-catastrophism expert and all round good egg Benny Peiser for The End is Nigh #4 which, sadly is yet to surface (it's okay Mr. Molcher, we know that you're very, very busy). Benny emailed me a little while back to ask if it would be possible to publish the interview elsewhere and I passed my transcript on to him.
The full interview can now be read over on Die Achse des Guten ("The Axis of Good") and is a must read for anyone who is interested in the end of the world, asteroids, religious fundamentalism and all that good stuff.

Thoughts on Bristol (long overdue)

Cast your collective minds back to the second week of May and the Bristol Comics Expo 2008. We were there and we had too much to drink but a grand time over all. What's more, as ususal, we promised a report of sorts that never really surfaced. Well, consider this a far too late, sorry excuse for said report.

First of all, we completely failed to take any pictures of the convention despite having our fully charged camera and several spare memory cards with us. We did however have an iMac in our hotel room with free internet connection (which we utilised only to listen to Last.fm really ;-/ ) and therefore can offer the following evidence of our visit.

Now obviously I can't really remember what happened very well now suffice it to say we met up with lots of lovely people including Oliver Redding, Matt Timson, James Fletcher, Paul Cornell, Caroline Symcox, Al Ewing, Misako Rocks, Sonia Leong, Emma Vieceli, Ian Whelan, Al Nolan, Bob Byrne, Colin Mathieson, Dave West, Andy Bloor, and seemingly millions of others. Thanks to everyone who bought stuff and got stuff signed by us and, of course, to everyone who set us on to new, exciting things and/or bought us a drink.

We did come home with a massive haul of stuff as ususal and this was due in no small part to Mr. Mike McLean of Asylum Books and Games (a very fine establishment) who pressed a big pile of (mostly zombie related) comics into our hands as soon as we ventured near his stall. Though we were very grateful to receive them, it has to be said that many of these books (without naming names) were, to be perfectly honest, awful. The standard of zombie series out there is, sadly, pretty uniformally dreadful with occasional blips of good stuff and the odd true gem. Why do people think they can get away with just putting a load of crap out? Anyway, enough of that. Mike also saw to it that we got our Elephantmen and Goon fix so we really couldn't fault him. Top chap!

Haunted Liverpool Launch next month

800 Years of Haunted Liverpool will be officially launched at the Unity Theatre in Liverpool on Saturday the 5th of July 2008 between 6 and 8pm. The Unity bar is fully licensed with Cains Bitter on tap.

I'll do my very best to give a short talk giving a bit of background on how the book came about and what it was like to work on. Limited edition copies of 800 Years of Haunted Liverpool will be on sale for £9.99.

In the early hours of this morning there was a small explosion outside the place where ProBoards' (our board providers) servers are kept. The explosion caused a power failure and, as a result, ours and many other message boards are temporarily offline.

We expect the board to be back online within the next few days but, initially, it will not be fully restored and may be missing data including posts and accounts/log in details. This will only be a temporary situation until ProBoards can restore the data from their backup servers.

Tori Amos' Comic Book Tattoo - first press

Comic Book Resources has a nice big feature/interview with writer/editor Rantz Hoseley over at http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=15838 which also has some really nice full page previews (not one of our pages sadly but you can't have everything).

Apart from our good selves, collaborating with Pia Guerra on Hey Jupiter, the book features work from mega talented folks such as Elizabeth Genco, Carla Speed McNeil, Mike Dringenberg and many, many more. With more than 50 stories in the book, all based upon/inspired by different Tori Amos songs, this is obviously going to be an amazing and diverse volume.

We're certainly looking forward to seeing it.

The Bleeding Horse and other ghost stories

I've been a fan of Mr. Brian J. Showers' Swan River Press chapbooks ever since I first got hold of them at a Dublin convention ~~a couple of years ago~~ this time last year.

Brian is currently getting ready to launch his new book The Bleeding Horse and other ghost stories at the Phoenix Convention (Dublin) at the end of the month. After the launch, the Moonlight Theatre Company will present two tales from Edgar Allan Poe, "The Cask Of Amontillado" performed by Vincent Fegan and "The Black Cat" performed by Paul Kealyn, directed by Gary Egan.

In the spirit of Le Fanu's classic trio of tales, Brian J. Showers' The Bleeding Horse and Other Ghost Stories infests his own Dublin neighbourhood with an authentic population of ghosts, ghouls, and goblins. Showers has filled each story with fascinating regional history, local atmosphere, and architectural details that are clearly visible today. While this gives the stories a factual flavour, the supernatural elements are entirely fictional. The result is a realistic and shadow-filled portrait of a modern neighbourhood, written in the traditional style of the classic literary ghost story.

I've Written A Book!

Remember back in September last year when I said I was writing a book called Haunted Liverpool for Tempus Publishing? Well, as of tonight (technically tomorrow morning I suppose), the manuscript and a disk containing all the images are on their way to the publishers. I have finished!

Thank you very, very, very much to everyone who has helped me with stories, reference and artwork. Leah has been slaving away checking my spelling, preparing maps and generally slogging her guts out for me these last few days and I'm so grateful for her help; no idea how I'd have done any of it without her.

Anyway, I've started a Haunted Liverpool Blog over at www.hauntedliverpool.blogspot.com.

It's pretty basic at the moment but I hope to get more stuff like links to the artists involved, etc soon-ish. There's an abridged piece from the book on there as a taster of what's to come. Hope you like it.

"Dynamite has confirmed for Newsarama that it will continue its “Eva” property (though now re-named “Eva: Daughter of Dracula”) in March, when the character will crossover with Top Cow’s the Darkness, marking the two company’s second such collaboration.

The project will be written by Leah Moore and John Reppion, with art by Edgar Salazar, and covers by Brett Booth, Salazar and Paul Renaud."

Comic Book Tattoo - A Tori Amos anthology
"... according to several blog posts that popped up last night it announces a new Image Comics anthology, Comic Book Tattoo, which will feature stories inspired by Tori Amos songs. Rantz Hosley is editing and the book will be out in time for Comic-Con International next year."

Moore & Reppion: "Blah, blah, blah"

For those of you interested in such things, there are a couple of new interviews with ourselves online now.

The first is over on Valhalla Comics Mug O Mead Blog where Kevin Bush very patiently quizzed us about our methods, the industry and our upcoming work.

Then over on Comicon's Pulse Jennifer M. Contino got us talking about Popgun Vol 1 and Deadeye - our horror/sci-fi/detective world which we has finally debuted in the book.

We're currently slogging away at the second script for a huge Dynamite Series which should see print in 2008 and have a healthy list of projects in progress and to be getting on with. It occurred to us recently that we've been writing comic together for almost five years now. Does that mean we have to stop saying "Well, we're still quite new to the industry" soon?

I'm very, very, very happy to be in FT again (my first ever piece of published writing was in #187, in 2004) as it's one of my favourite mags and, in fact, the only magazine I've ever subscribed to in my life. Birmingham 2007 report

Firstly, apologies for the lateness of this bit of Bloggage; things seem increasingly hectic here in Moore & Reppion towers (AKA the spare room) and the days seem to be getting shorter both literally and metaphorically.

Anyway, we arrived for our flying visit to Birmingham late Friday afternoon. Drawing on past convention experience, we found somewhere to eat immediately (Wagamamma: lovely but very, very spicy this time for some reason) in an effort to line our stomachs. After checking into our hotel and getting ourselves sorted we headed off to the party which was being held at Bennet's Bar as a joint launch for the con and Markosia's new book Hope Falls.

Yes, this really is a comics party. Who'd have thought, eh?

We had a grand time hobnobbing with the likes of Ben Dickson, Paul "the nicest man in comics, film, television and writing generally" Cornell, Leigh Gallagher & Niki Robinson, Bryan Talbot, Declan Shalvey, Lew Stringer and loads of other vastly interesting folks. And, of course, we drank...

After a frankly crap night's sleep we were awoken on Saturday by someone playing the bagpipes outside our hotel window. No matter how hard we looked we couldn't see them but we could %$&*ing hear them! Leah was feeling a bit too delicate for the hotel breakfast so I opted for the "last night's cold pizza" option; breakfast of kings!

We arrived at the con at about 10:15 AM and were amazed at the size of the queue outside the entrance. Inside the place was already mad busy and, after saying a few hurried hellos and lining up to get a sketch and signature from Mike Mignola, we found ourselves sitting between Dave Gibbons and Mark Buckingham doing a bit of signing.

We had to run and catch the coach back to Liverpool at 4 PM so spent most of our time trying to say hello and goodbye to as many people in as short an amount of time as was possible. We bumped into James Fletcher (who has done a fantastic job on the art for our contribution to the Nevermore anthology), had a quick gab with the Accent UK and Engine Comics chaps and generally went into a kind of comics related sensory overload.

SubCon 2007 report

So, we arrived in Dublin late on Friday afternoon confident that we had our mobile phone fully charged, a list of phone numbers and that we had given our number to everyone who would need it. This was our third trip to the city and I'm completely at a loss when it comes to explaining why we hadn't remembered that our bloody phone does not work in Dublin. We can receive calls and texts (at a cost) but we can't call or text other people. Yes, I know that means we should switch networks or something but, to be perfectly honest, we never use the phone anyway. Getting back to the point, we were so disgusted when we realised that we'd been so stupid about the phone that we turned it off (thinking it was useless). Only to realise when we turned it back on again half an hour or so later that we had loads of texts and voicemails and that receiving them had now eaten all our credit. Rubbish!

Anyway, after a bit of getting ever so slightly lost in Dublin we found our way to the Central Hotel and met up with Bryan Talbot, slovobooks and ephiriel who led the way to a very, very nice Indian restaurant. There we met the notable author and general gad about Brian J. Showers who was accompanied by the lovely Aly. We had a great meal and a good old gab and, after saying our goodnights to slovobooks and ephiriel, the rest of us headed back to the central for a pint or ten. There were lots of nice people there including Simon Furman and his very nice missus. I tried to stay off the Guinness for a change...

We were up bright an early on Saturday (for comic writers anyway) and we're over the river at the Central Hotel (where the con was taking place) by a little after ten. After bumping into Steve Niles & Sarah Wilkinson, Al Nolan, Danielle Lavigne, Michael Carrol & Leonia and various other astoundingly interesting people (especially for that time of the morning) we were ensconced on a table next to Bryan Talbot who was already dealing with a queue of people all wanting their copies of Alice in Sunderland signed.

This was easily the best con we've ever attended in terms of the fans and interest we had during the day. We had so many people coming in looking for our work and bringing in copies of Albion (loads and loads of them!!!) for us to sign. Thanks very much to everyone who we spoke to on the day; you really made us feel welcome and like the stuff we write might actually get bought and read by people (scary thought).

Leah and Y the Last Man artist Pia Guerra did a great "Women in Comics" panel (yeah, there's alway one of those isn't there?) in which they discussed the fact that neither of them really felt like their gender was particularly relevant to job they did. There were lots of questions from the audience and notably from Father Ted and It Crowd writer/director/creator Graham Linehan who was sat in the front row and is obviously a big fan of Y the Last Man.

The con ended at five. We all got drunk and went for Japanese food then headed back to the hotel and drank some more. It was grand and we'll certainty be back again next year if they'll have us.

SubCon, Dublin this weekend

Sub-Con is Ireland's longest running comic con and this year sees our biggest venture yet!

With a combination of comics, manga, models, dvds, posters and t shirts as well as an plethora of comic guests.
The list includes Steve Niles, creator/writer of 30 Days of Night as well as penning the graphic adaption of 28 Days Later, Pia Guerra, artist on the wonderful Y the Last Man and Bryan Talbot, one of comics royalty whose new book, Alice in Sunderland has surpassed any of the hype leading up to its release. Haunted Liverpool

I've just received word today that my proposal for a Haunted Liverpool book has been accepted by Tempus Publishing. I have Brian J. Showers to thank for putting the idea in my head and getting me in touch with the company (cheers Brian!).

The book is penciled for a June 2008 release and should be about 100 pages long with loads of photos and illustrations. Exciting stuff, eh? Now all I have to do is write it...

Erm, you don't know anything about ghosts in Liverpool do you...? :-/

#3 contains the concluding part of our story "Battle for Atlantis" with art by Pablo Marcos and Stjepan Sejic. Here's a little taster of the thrilling finale.

Mecon Report

Whew. First chance to actually sit down and reflect on the weekend since got home yesterday evening.

We had a lovely time in Belfast, mainly thanks to the hordes of lovely folk we got to have a sit and a chat with, or a meal or a pint. The actual panels and official events turned out to be less productive in terns of laughs per minute, but then isn't that always the way at cons? We met everyone on Friday night for the opening ceremony, and then the quiz. I soon realized that i have no knowledge whatsoever of science fiction. this was a bit of a blow, but luckily neither did my team mates. Myself and the other four members of the team managed to come bottom of all, which earned us the booby prize. Just goes to show if you are going to fail, fail spectacularly well!
We managed not to have hangovers on Saturday, despite drinking copious amounts of Guinness, and were there bright and early for the con.
We went to see the Parodies in SF panel, which ambled along nicely, and then grabbed a quick sit about and chat before our Writing Comics workshop with Catie Murphy and Paul Cornell. It was really interesting to see how they approached the whole thing, and we managed to witter on for quite a while, hopefully entertainingly in places.
Padraig (center zombie) claimed his free pint (or mineral water in this case) from John (left zombie) for turning up in a " Reppion's zombie army" T-shirt.

We had a brief interlude before we had a panel on transferring comics to other mediums. I doubt we shed any fresh light on the whole subject, but nobody threw anything. We missed the guest of honor speech because we were all starving hungry, and went off to squeeze in a riotous lunch with P J Holden (right hand zombie above).
We went to see the Doctor Who panel, and then Mr Padraig Ó Méalóid organized a meal at a Chinese restaurant. I had a really nice meal for saying I'm not usually fond of Chinese food, and we all trooped back to the bar for more beers and the casino night. I played Texas hold em for the first time and lost £2, but it was for charity so an excellent loss really. It was hard to stop my brain inserting excitable commentary in the style of late night poker shows on TV...which may have affected my play. We stumbled off to bed fairly early by convention standards and read Paul Cornell's Pete Wisdom trade paperback which we both enjoyed immensely.
Sunday started with an almost barren crossovers panel, with the odd person filtering in from the coffee morning next door (filtering...coffee...is that a pun?). We all soon realized that there aren't that many crossovers in SCi Fi,and so we rambled around the subject for a while and then went off to the bar. we had such a lot of fun in th bar, john forgot to go to the web comics panel and we went to see the novel panel instead.

Iain Banks Alastair Reynolds and Catie Murphy were very entertaining and interesting all round. We had time to fit in a last bout of chatting before we took over the last panel of the day in a revolutionary fashion. We had been a bit disappointed by the the lack of guests on panels over the weekend (Paul Cornell did a whole panel by himself!)

and guests were left to basically organize their own convention. The guest of honor Iain Banks hadn't been put on any panels, neither had Ian McDonald, and we decided along with Paul Cornell and Catie Murphy to round as many guests and audience members up as we could and go and take over the "Dead Authors telling tales" panel. we decided it was an open question panel so you could ask anything you wanted of any of the guests. It unsurprisingly was a complete scream. everyone got their best anecdotes out, dusted off their favorite stories, and had a great giggle.

We managed to fit in a quick trot round the shops on Monday morning before the flight home. i slept through the turbulence, and could have slept all day long to be honest. why is talking so tiring?

Yippee Ki Yay Albion

We received an email a few days ago from Mr. Kim Newman in which he congratulated us on the "product placement" of Albion in Die Hard 4.0. Naturally, we assumed that he was either joking or that his super developed film critic skills had enabled him to spot the comic despite the fact that it had only appeared on screen for a nano second. However, in the days that have followed others have commented on the the fact that they too have noticed our book in Die Hard 4.0 and offered us their congratulations. Basically, we're stunned... at least we have a really good excuse for going to see the film now. I'll do my best not to stand up shouting and pointing when the comic comes on screen, I promise.

Actually reading some comics for a change

When people ask us about what comics we're currently enjoying we usually look a bit embarrassed and mumble something about "not having much time" or some such. The truth is, we don't read a hell of a lot of new stuff or, more accurately, we don't read it while it's still new; we're pretty relaxed when it comes to getting our hands on comics.

However, one man who tries his best to keep us up to date is Mike McLean, proprietor of Asylum Books and Games up in Aberdeen. Disappointed at our lack of commitment to the medium, Mike occasionally sends us big fat boxes of comics and today was one of those days where the postman wakes me up with such a parcel.

The latest two issues of Elephantmen were in there (which we are both big fans of) as well as tonnes of zombie comics; some good, many terrible and at least one that was so very terrible it was almost back to being good.

Declan actually illustrates a story from Mister McLean himself (sometimes known as Tequila Mike, and for good reason). This is a very cool comic (probably our favorite from the lot); drunken pub stories in comic book form is really a genius concept.

New comics out now/soon/in the future

Raise the Dead #3 - "Thicker Than Water" came out on the 6th of June and the reaction seems to be very positive so far. We certainly like it anyway. Only one issue to go now; how time flies.

Witchblade - Shades of Gray #2 - "The Enemy of My Enemy" will arrive in shops in the USA tomorrow (the 20th of June) and here in the UK on Thursday (the 21st). Hopefully, the slight delay between the first issue and this one won't have put too many of you off *crosses fingers*.

Savage Tales #2 (featuring part two of our Battle for Atlantis mini) is also out as of tomorrow/Thursday. People seem to be loving this; it's a really old fashioned adventure/sword and sorcery type anthology title and that's obviously something that's very appealing to a lot of readers.

We're currently working on another four issue mini for Dynamite (which we've already turned in the first script for) as well as researching the hell out of a prospective adaptation project for them. Busy as ususal.

Over the last few weeks we seem to have been up to all sorts and now that we're into June it's time to stop, take a breath and, well, Blog...

Over the weekend of the 12th and 13th of May we missed the Bristol Comic Expo (for the first time in something like four years) because we had a family wedding to attend.

Lots of people have since informed us that is was the best Bristol ever (which, we hope, had nothing to with our not being there).

On Saturday the 19th of May Leah and I headed down/over to Stoke on Trent where our old chum Shane Oakley had somehow managed to wangle us a day as extras in a zombie film called Out of Space. Ostensibly, this was so that I could write a piece for www.RevenantMagazine.com about the film and whole experience (which will be appearing online very soon) but it was also a very good laugh. Very nice popping into the pub over the road for last orders still dressed as zombies afterwards too. The bar man's reaction: "Alright, you doin' a film are you?".

Sunday the 27th of May saw us over in the historic market town of Market Weighton for Giant Bradley Day which I will be writing an article about that will hopefully appear in Fortean Times during the next few months.

In addition to all the historical giant stuff (which I'm saving for the article, obviously) not only did we see what was professed to be the world's biggest garden spade...

...we also had a dream opportunity to take loads of photos of classic cars and produce the following Coop style post (with a uniquely British twist)...

That's right my friends, Morris Minors by the dozen. Look at the engine on this little bugger; that's an Austin designed 0.8 L overhead valve A-Series, unless I'm very much mistaken. A top speed of 63 mph. What a beauty, but I digress.

In addition to all the above mentioned shenanigans we've also completed (this very evening... or is that morning now?) the script for the very first issue of a brand new Dynamite Entertainment/Top Cow crossover series. Details coming soon.

Oh and don't forget, Raise the Dead #3 is out this week so make sure you pick up a copy before it sells out (did that sound too cocky?).

Accent UK's Zombies competition

Hooray! It's an actual Moore & Reppion competition! To celebrate the release of Accent UK's Zombies anthology (OUT NOW!) we're giving away two copies of the book.

Since there are two copies of Zombies up for grabs, to make this fair to both arty and non arty types, we'll have two different methods of deciding who gets the book.

Non arty:

Q: In which zombie classic did the now infamous zombie vs. shark scene take place? Email answer (marked Zombies competition) to Moore_Reppion@btinternet.com.

(all correct entries will be put into the hat of fate a winner picked at random)

Arty:

Best picture of myself and/or Leah (or Leah and/or myself... if you see what I mean) as zombies (we don't have to be fighting sharks), posted here in this thread wins the book. There are pictures of us on our Biographies page and probably elsewhere too.

You can enter both the arty and the non arty but you can obviously only win one book. The closing date for entries is Tuesday the 5th of June.

Dynamite say: "No Reprints"

"Dynamite currently does not have plans to offer second prints of either issue, but does encourage retailers to check their orders on subsequent issues - and fans to reserve their copies as well. Issue #2 for Raise the Dead shipped this past Wednesday (5/2/07) and issue #2 of Savage Tales (MAR073340) is being prepped for shipping later this month." - originally reported by Matt Brady on Newsarama, (and thankyou Danielle for pointing us to it! :D )

I don't know if this is good news or bad news really, i imagine that it means there will be a trade paperback, which is always nice, but it might mean if you missed the first one that you'll have to scour Ebay for a copy. If you want to send the chaps at Dynamite a link to a review you've done, or you want to ask them about the trade, or ask what merchandise will be available, you can do all that and more by emailing letters@dynamiteentertainment.com

We are currently working on a small eight page story for an Image Anthology, which we are very excited about, and then we're starting on the next mini for Dynamite. Its all go at the moment!

we are sadly not going to be able to make it down to the Bristol comics convention this weekend, we have been the last four years in a row, but this year we have a family wedding to attend, so anyone who does go, have a pint for us!

We have just seen the pencils of the the first four pages of Battle for Atlantis part three, and they look great. I'll miss writing those zany Atlanteans! ;-)

Raise the Dead #2 out today!

Raise the Dead #2 - "The Road to Hell" arrives in shops across the USA today (UK tomorrow).

So far, people seem to be really enjoying the series and we're very happy with the reviews we've read. Some people are trying to put it down a bit, saying that it's "just another zombie book" but they almost always then go on to say that, for a genre book, it's solid, well drawn, well written and works really well. We couldn't ask for more really; we never set out to re-write the book on zombies, we just tried to do the best zombie series we could and we're pretty proud of how it's come out. That's thanks in no small part to our fantastic artist Hugo Petrus of course and our colourist Ivan Nunes. Cheers guys.

We have already seen the last page of art for our story in Nevermore by Selfmadehero, we have seen the first four pages of coloured art for our Gene Simmons House of Horrors story, and we have seen lots and lots of beautiful art on the rest of the Witchblade and Raise the Dead issues. to be honest its getting a bit scary.

if you buy any of this stuff then please do come and let me know what you made of it. We always want to know how far off the mark (or how close to it) we have been.
