Post P-Con 4

Last weekend saw the fourth annual Phoenix Convention take place in Dublin, Ireland and I'm happy to report that it was even better than last year's event.

2007's guest of honour was Kim Newman and somehow I ended up being the interviewer. Sadly, the dictaphone which I ordered specially to record the interview didn't arrive in time so I haven't actually got any way of transcribing the thing. Anyway, rest assured that it went very well.

Other guests included the editorial team from Albedo 1, Michael Carroll, Paul Cornell, Raven Dane, George Green, Conor Kostick, Oisin McGann, Juliet E McKenna, Ken MacLeod, Deborah J. Miller, C E Murphy, John W Sexton and Charlie Stross. And there were many, many very enjoyable and informative talks on subjects as varied as "Around the Writer's Block" and "Zombies".

There was even an "Alan Moore Show and Tell" curated by our old friend Mr. Pádraig Ó Méalóid which Leah was roped into (as a helper, not an exhibit).

During a weekend of meeting lots of new people and catching up with old friends I was especially pleased to make the acquaintance of Mr. Brian J. Showers whose Swan River Press chapbooks and Literary Walking Tours of Gothic Dublin I now heartily recommend.



All in all we had a fantastic time (for which we thank new P-Con chairman and organiser Frank Darcy) and sincerely hope that we get asked back again in the future.

If you can get over to Dublin in early April (when I believe the con is being held) next year then you should definitely check out P-Con 5 with guest of honour Catie Murphy.

New Bryan Talbot For 2007

Just received an email form the stupidly talented Bryan Talbot letting us know that he's going to be back in a big way in 2007 with a whole heap of new stuff (he's even doing some 2000 AD cover work apparently).

Blogs and links and missing months...

Well, here's hoping you all had a very merry Xmas and that you're gearing up for a mental/quiet New Year's celebration (depending on your personal preference) in a few days time.

2006 seems to have been the shortest year of my life so far but, paradoxically, it seems to have been jam packed with stuff too. Leah and I have done more writing this year than ever before and we're due to be doing even more in the coming months (and hopefully for the foreseeable future); it's beginning to sink in that this is actually a viable career and that we might actually be able to keep our heads above water and make a living. Which is nice.

Thanks to everyone who has helped us out and supported us over the last twelve months (and the proceeding ones). This obviously includes our families but also our friends and in particular some of the new friends who we have been fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of via our work. Thanks to all the lovely folk who invited us places, let us sleep on their couches, cooked us breakfast, took us to the pub and generally looked after us and treated us like people who do a real job instead of dossers who just make stuff up. Your psychological support should not be underestimated; we need to believe that we are writers and that people are reading the stuff we do in order to grow and continue and you're the people who help to make it all seem a bit more realistic. Cheers.

In amongst all this aforementioned busyness we have neglected to make time to keep on top of updating our links page and our (fairly newly expandable and contractible) Blog Roll; there are loads of cool sites and Blogs that we want to acknowledge and point you towards but we never seem to find the time. New Year's resolution number one: find time to spread the linkage. And I will, starting now...

Albion TPB Release Dates

There's been a bit of confusion about the dates for the trade (not least because I keep telling everyone that its definitely not out until January 2007) but, having had it explained to me, I'm here to give you the correct info.

The trade will be released through DC on the 20th of December 2006 in the US and a second version will be released through Titan on the 26th of January 2007 here in the UK.

Hope that clears things up, and sorry you Brits won't be getting and Albion annual for Xmas.

Signed AARGHs For Sale!

"AARGH (Artists Against Rampant Government Homophobia) was a one-off comic book anthology published by Mad Love in 1988. The comic was designed to aid the fight against Clause 28, which was a controversial amendment to British local authorities which was designed to outlaw the promotion of homosexuality." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AARGH

Although Clause 28 was eventually repealed in 2003, discrimination is something that millions of gay, bisexual and transgendered people still have to suffer everyday. Lancaster Con '06 = succcess!

We went over to Lancaster on the Friday evening, thinking that we were being clever by avoiding an early morning drive on the Saturday. In reality, it just meant that we spent Friday night in the pub drinking crazy real ales with Bryan Talbot, Ant Mercer, Shane Chebsy, John Freeman and the like only to have to get up at 7:00 AM to move our car out of a paid car park. Not good.

Once we were sorted (I'm not even going to comment on where we stayed or the peculiarities of our breakfast as Leah has already covered those subjects in lurid detail over on MySpace) it was a bit of a hike to get to the venue. It should have been easy to spot really as it's a couple of hundred feet tall and stands on top of a huge hill but, it was very misty and rainy...

No, it's not a joke, this really is where the con was held.

Inside it was much nicer and, despite the weather, really, really busy.

Robyn Talbot, very nice chap whose name I can't remember (sorry) and the stupidly talented Bryan Talbot who totally wowed us with his comic book presentation.

This was a really brilliant little con; really friendly, free to get in, great guests and a brilliant turn out. Well done to Ant Mercer for getting it all together and cheers to everyone who helped out and or attended.

Next year we're driving up on the Saturday morning mind.

THE END IS NIGH! is on the look-out for contributors for its massive fourth issue – there's going to be a brand new format, more content, and even more 100% apocalyptic action!

And we're flinging the scope for submissions for this issue WIDE OPEN! So if you've got an apocalyptic idea, we want to hear from you! Whether it's based on the next scientific scare story, the latest religious rant about the Rapture, or you've got your own vision of the End of the World, let us know about it!

SUPPLEMENT IDEAS

In past issues, a 'theme' has taken over the whole magazine, this time we're accepting any apocalyptic ideas while also running a special When Nature Runs Amok! supplement. Global warming has never been 'hotter' news and we want to bring our readers the latest news, features and weird stuff about when nature gets its own back! Why not have a play around with:

• global warming (from submerged continents to worldwide draught to the new ice age!)
• pandemic diseases
• apocalyptic natural disasters (from a polar shift to cinsane weather to volcano meltdown!)
• humanity replaced by the next step in evolution (Mutant superheroes? Vampires? Homo superior? Animals taking over? It could happen!)
• Nature versus technology – which will destroy civilisation first?!

But remember – so long as it's about the End of the World, it's in THE END IS NIGH!

CAN YOU HELP US?

THE END IS NIGH!'s success has been built on the hard work of its army of contributors. From comic strip artists to feature and short story writers to people who chuck in the odd joke or two – they all make it the fantastic magazine it is! So why not join their ranks? We're on the look out for the following things:

Comic strips
We need writers and artists for comic strips from one page to six pages in length – get your ideas in print and your work seen by an audience the crosses genres and spans the globe! And don't just go for the easy old ideas – go crazy! After all, it is the end of the world ;)

Features
We need feature writers to explain all the latest, biggest and scariest End of the World scenarios – is there a scary new cult on the apocalyptic map? What's the latest thing scientists are saying will end all life on Earth? What new vision of Armageddon is being preached from the pulpit? What horrors does our planet, our solar system, or our own warped minds have in store for us? All ideas for features up to 1,000 words in length considered!

Spot illustrations
You don't have to do a strip for the next issue – why not let your imagination go mad with some spot illustrations? There will be features that need a visual to grab the reader's attention – your work could bring those words to life! Each issue needs dozens and dozens of images to illustrate our wide range of content. Get the chance to show off with some designs of your own!

Cartoons
The End of the World is no laughing matter – unless you read THE END IS NIGH! Got an apocalyptic gag that you want to share? Well make our readers laugh away their post-Millennial fears with a cartoon. Don't worry if you can't draw – we can put you in touch with artists to bring your sense of humour to the page!

Short stories
A budding Asimov or are you more John Wyndham? Bring your vision of the End of the World to life in your own words. We want to hear your pitches for short stories up to 1,500 words – just send a rough plot to submission@endisnigh.co.uk

Be A Zombie Journalist!

How would you like to be a reporter for Revenant Magazine? How would you like some free zombie goodies? Read on!

We've got a pair of tickets for Max Brooks' Film Festival of the Living Dead (Barbican, London Nov 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th) but no-one to report on the event for us (sadly, I can't attend). What are we supposed to do? Give them away!

If you think you've got what it takes to be the Revenant correspondent at the event then we want to hear from you.

We would like all interested parties to write a short piece (200 words max) about why they feel they are the best person for the job and post it here in this thread.

FD and I will pick out the star candidate and he or she will be heading over to the film festival wearing a free Revenant t-shirt and with a free copy of World War Z (courtesy of Duckworth Publishers) under their arm. The tickets will also entitle the winner to attend a question and answer session with WWZ author Max Brooks, so you'd better think of some original questions to ask him too.

All entrants must be over 18 years of age, able to make their own way to and from the events in London, UK and must be prepared and have the necessary equipment to provide a full report on the event (including photographs, if possible).

The closing date for entries is Halloween 2006.

More new stuff happening soon.

Well, the Shop page has been updated so that we now have an Amazon Shop and a PayPal Shop (visit the latter to order your copy of Albion #6 OUT NOW!).

We've turned in another script for Dynamite Entertainment and we've been given a hint about who our artist on that project might be (and we've very excited about that). Details of the series should be announced next month with the first issue coming out in early '07.

Details of Leah's big festive project will now definitely be announced in early November.

We've had a glimpse of the cover art for our Space Doubles story which looks fantastic enough already even though it's only half done.

We've got tonnes of stuff in the pipeline; plenty of scripts and articles and pitches to be getting on with. We've been sniffing around a couple of companies with some original ideas and we've had a few people approaching us with new stuff. Basically, we're busy and we're happy and it's all looking pretty cool.

Obviously, this is a good thing but it really makes me wish we still had a second computer (damn you laptop thieves, I haven't forgotten about that twatting I owe you!).
